I know what you mean but on the other hand something like Talking Heads' “Take Me to the River” became their song instead of Al Green's and I don't get the impression Matthew Sweet wanted that to happen. And it IS a bonus track, after all.

I assume that Matthew Sweet addresses the degree to which he and Hoffs copy some songs, but I'm having trouble navigating there. I find their version of “Marquee Moon” much too dead on–it seems more like a stunt than a cover. (It does, however, nicely illustrate how much of a lead instrument the drums are on Television's original.)
