The Popdose Podcast: Episode 1

This is something we’ve been talking about doing for a long time — in fact, we really thought we’d be debuting the Popdose Podcast over a year ago. It wasn’t until we were finally able to trick our friend Dave Lifton into shuttering his long-running and wildly popular Wings for Wheels series that our plans came together — with the technical savvy necessary to edit our nonsensical jabbering into pure audio entertainment, and a strong enough personality to keep the entire podcast from dissolving into a giggling fit of mom jokes, Dave was the crucial final ingredient we were waiting for all along.

So open up your pod, baby, and let us in — and remember, this is only our debut. Even television classics like According to Jim didn’t enjoy their finest moments until they’d had a little time to hit their stride, and you have no idea what we have in store for you during the coming months. (Note: neither do we.) Like what you hear? Hate it? Drop us a line in the comments and let us know. And now, without further ado…

The Popdose Podcast, Episode 1: Donkey Eatin’ a Pony (1:09:49, 64.9 MB), featuring Jeff Giles, Jason Hare, and Dave Lifton.

  • The trick will be working Wing into every episode somehow.
  • No trick necessary. Just have someone blurt out, "Oh my God, there sounds like a terrible car accident out there!", and the rest writes itself.
  • Maybe "trick" was the wrong word. I should have written "fun part."
  • Matt
I think an official theme song from Wing is in order. Wing, come back!
  • EightE1
Perhaps "Can't Get Enuff" by Winger.
  • Matt
That's a fantastic idea - perhaps Winger could even record a new version.
  • maxus
Yeah, Winger would probably charge less than Wing.
  • Ted
I liked your discussion the BMI and ASCAP and how downloading music from blogs or even Popdose is something that's not as attractive to readers as it used to be. I know the music reviews with downloadable songs were a way to get readership up on certain posts, but the last few reviews you've done without featuring a couple of downloadable songs have done well in terms of page views.
  • I'd like to think there was a sort of silent graduation that is occurring. The site is moving past some repository to grab free songs from, and becoming the magazine we've always seen it as.
  • Exactly.
  • EightE1
I am sitting in my cube trying to stifle my laughter. And failing miserably. And I'm only halfway through the podcast.

Thank you for the ASCAP/BMI demanding fees for samples info - very interesting!

Speaking of Christmas music and the 'Saw Lady' - you should check out her musical saw Christmas CD (way better than the one that was on the radio last year - I forget it's name but it was a guy playing the saw). She has samples of it on her website.
I see her at 59th & Lex all the time. Her hat & shirt don't say 'Saw Lady' - it says SawLady.com - which I think is a very clever way of advertising her website. Check out the photo you took of her - you got an advertisement for her website in it!

    - I had a dream...
    - I had an awesome dream!
Gentlemen, I damn near shat myself.
  • Thanks. Tell your friends!
  • maxus
Friends? I'm a Popdose fan, remember?
  • Shit, I guess then you are, essentially, telling your friends.
  • maxus
I guess I could always tell my Robbie Nevil 45's and vintage Toto tees, right?

Make sure to watch the episode of "Live From Daryl's House" featuring Todd Rundgren. They make sausages. I'm not kidding.

Just wanted to say that I really dug the podcast. It was informative, entertaining, and I actually did laugh out loud a few times while I was running. Wonder what that passersby must have thought!

    Keep it up!
  • Great! Glad to hear it. Thanks for letting us know!
  • D-Pete
Nice work, fellas. I was waiting to hear Jason break down McD's work on the "South Park" soundtrack, but it never came up. (Hipster irony, or genuine McD love on the part of Parker & Stone?) The Daryl Hall stuff had me rolling.
  • So does anybody have any suggestions for names for the final segment?
