I don't care that it would be considered dated, it just had that raw power rock. Huge thick and meaty guitars, booming drums, just solid rock with a ton of attitude.WOW, still a favorite, great work Tom!

I would love to really dial in the Against the Law type of record again. I think that if a station played "Auf Wiedersehen" today, it would fit right in. Then again, I'm in the geezer generation now, so naturally I'm going to think that. But POP it is, and pop they were, with a hard, loud live presentation --- ergo, "Power Pop" is the term that best describes these records. I am admittedly and unapologetically a pop guy. Singles were the name of the game for me, and I was always gratified to secure a place on any station's playlist for my bands, who were distinctly radio-unfriendly when I was assigned them. Once a band had a hit single in those days, it attracted a giant listening audience, and then the band could take that audience down any subsequent musical road it chose. Also, I wonder how really dissatisfied these bands are with their royalty income today, since it represents hundreds of thousands of downloads of those hit singles they're complaining about. Album sales? Fugedaboudit. It's the individual songs that generate royalty income today.

Love reading opinions like this one, and I share your feeling about those records. My teenage self (with my long lost pal Gary) cruised the streets on Fairfield, CA blasting these albums. My mid-40's self still has not tired of them. Cheap Trick NEVER sounded better to my ears.

PS...I have heard the Albini "In Color". I still prefer the TW version. I think there are a lot of acts who tried to get 'hard rock' and the music suffered for it...Kiss anyone? Those 70's albums were pop...but beat the harder later stuff by a mile.

I won't go through my whole routine again…so my short version is “Cheap Trick + Tom Werman= Power Pop Heaven”.

I think there are few non-Beatle acts plus producer who can top the 1,2,3 punch of “In Color”, “Heaven Tonight” and “Dream Police”. Michael's very honest and public accounts about the illness and subsequent death of his wife Kyle were gut-bruising. Yet the fact he chose to be open about the whole thing, rather than keeping everything hushed up, stands as something other families who have lost loved ones to Cancer can appreciate. It will never make the loss "worth it" though.

Never been a Stryper fan per se, but I've always appreciated that they were there, if that makes sense. I enjoyed my time with Stryper, and regret that the record wasn't more successful. I'll always remember our first meeting with a smile. Michael's mom managed the band, and I was invited to a meeting with them at Michael's house in Orange County. After being introduced to everyone, Michael's mom brought out a platter of bagels, cream cheese and lox. I just loved it.

Michael Sweet is a true gentleman. I enjoyed my time with Stryper, and regret that the record wasn't more successful. (well, ok, Molly Hatchet admittedly would be a stretch) But it doesn't necessarily have to have a Latin feel to benefit from some locomotive percussion.

I love congas, so if I were actually practiced enough on them, I'd put them wherever I could….
