The Saturday Mixtape: 3/15/08

Hi all. I’m guest-posting for Jeff today. When I was probably about 13 or so, my Uncle Mark made a series of mixtapes for my family that I’ve tried to reconstruct here. He was a big fan of Irish music, so it seemed appropriate to post this as close to St. Patrick’s Day as possible.

Side 1:

The Violent Femmes – American Music from Why Do Birds Sing?

Richard Thompson – I Feel So Good from Rumor and Sigh

Shriekback – Nemesis from Oil & Gold

The Replacements – Talent Show from Don’t Tell a Soul

The Proclaimers – I’m on My Way from Sunshine on Leith

The Pixies – Here Comes Your Man from Doolittle

Soul Asylum – Runaway Train from Grave Dancers Union

Buffalo Tom – Taillights Fade from Let Me Come Over

John Wesley Harding – Ordinary Weekend from Why We Fight

The Pogues & Kirsty MacColl – Fairytale of New York from If I Should Fall from Grace with God

Side 2:

Peter Holsapple & Chris Stamey – Angels from Mavericks

Peter Holsapple & Chris Stamey – She Was the One from Mavericks

The Levellers – One Way from Levelling the Land

Marshall Crenshaw – Someday, Someway from Marshall Crenshaw

Adrian Belew – Men in Helicopters from Young Lions

The Waterboys – Fisherman’s Blues from Fisherman’s Blues

The Waterboys – Strange Boat from Fisherman’s Blues

Grant Lee Buffalo – Fuzzy from Fuzzy

Steve Earle – The Other Kind from The Hard Way

The Replacements – Skyway from Pleased to Meet Me

  • Doolittle, Marshall Crenshaw, Rumour And Sigh, Why Do Birds Sing, Don't Tell A Soul and Fisherman's Blues? When did you break into my house and steal my CD collection?

Ditto. Usually, of the tracks you mix, I own 2 of 10. Today, 9 of 10.
  • David Ragland
Thanks for this. "I Feel So Good" is one of my very favorite songs. I love live versions of this song with just vocal and guitar.

Have you heard the Proclaimers' song "Better Days"? It's from around the same time period. Absolutely gorgeous.
  • Let me guess. Your Uncle Mark would be in his early 40s about now. Like me...
  • Close - I think he's somewhere around 50. He divorced out of the family, so I haven't actually talked to him in ages. I should look him up and direct him here, though, he'd probably be pleased.
  • Incidentally, for those who have seen me perform American Music in person, this is where I originally heard it. And Talent Show is where I got the idea of doing it at the WHS talent show.
  • Thanks for including "She Was The One" -- a great song too few people know.
  • This was another song I performed live (this time at a choir concert). It caused this girl to have a short-lived infatuation with me. So...powerful music, I guess.

"Skyway", about which Tommy Stinson used to say when Westerburg would play it in concert with the Mats, "Thanks, Gordon Lightfoot!" Still love it and that album, though.
  • What a great mix tape! Thanks for sharing. Your uncle had good taste in music.
