CINDERELLA
Song Title: “Somebody Save Me”
Album: Night Songs
Release Date: Aug. 2, 1986

Why You Remember Them: Rode to fame by digging fingernails deep into Bon Jovi’s coattails in the post-Slippery When Wet epoch.

Worldwide Total Album Sales To Date: 18 million

How You Can Tell This Cinderella From The Cartoon Princess On Google: Be sure to click on “Cinderella * Rock N Roll.” Pretty much everything else is wicked Disney.

Other Key Tracks: “Shake Me,” “Don’t Know What You Got Till It’s Gone”

Humiliating Personal Memory: I dubbed (high-speedly, like I even have to say that) this tape from a friend’s brother in Upland, Ind., in 1986. The song that came after “Somebody Save Me” was called “In from the Outside,” and I was briefly obsessed with “In from the Outside,” except the extended prog-rock outro thing. Whatevs.

Unlikely Appearance in Post-Nirvana World: Somehow landed the track “Hot and Bothered” on the soundtrack to Wayne’s World.

Best Part Of Their Wikipedia Entry: Pretty straightforward actually; not a lot of throwing flaming whiskey bottles around or pushing pianos out of hotel room windows here. Wait, here’s something: Kenny Aronoff furnished drums on the band’s fourth album, Still Climbing.

Estimated Number of Greatest Hits Collections: 5
Most Recent Greatest Hits Collection Title: Rocked, Wired and Bluesed

Estimated Number Of Live Albums: 6, counting imports (!)
Most Alarming Live Album Title: Extended Versions

Sweet Christ, They Actually Covered: “Blue Christmas,” a gift from singer Tom Keifer to the Monster Ballads Xmas CD in December 2007.

Most Improbable Song Title: “Bad Attitude Shuffle.” Indicates both a degree of wild youthful abandon and impaired mobility. Honorable Mention: “Bad Seamstress Blues/Fallin’ Apart at the Seams.”

Pre-Nirvana Song Titles: “Hell On Wheels,” “Shake Me”

Post-Nirvana Song Titles: “Through The Rain,” “Blood From A Stone”

Arbitarily Scored Ferocity of Devil-Horns Thrust: 7. “Somebody Save Me” rules, in part.

Looking Ahead: Cinderella was forced to scrap a 2008 tour with Warrant and Lynch Mob when singer Tom Keifer’s left vocal cord hemorrhaged. Cinderella’s message board says Keifer’s voice is now back to normal; the band is rumored to have 2009 festival dates lined up.

  • Cinderella (much like Tesla) always seemed more earnest in their approach. Where Bon Jovi adopted a pop sensibility Cinderella brought blues-rock (à la Gary Moore) to the table. I can't wait to see what the archives dig up in the future...

"Night Songs" was hideous garbage. In addition, the band itself was too ugly for the glam scene and too pretty to be taken seriously as an actual metal outfit. However, the kick-ass authenticity of "Long Cold Winter" cannot be denied.

Thanks again for the great series, looking forward to more!

Interesting start to the series though Cinderella has to be close to my least favorite of all the 80s bands.

Ok, I've got to go with the "how can one tell if the singer's vocals are back to normal?" joke.

    Self-absorbed request list:
    Kix
    Shark Island
    Tora Tora
    Danger Danger
    Tangiers
    Firehouse
    Babylon A.D.
    Winger
Warrant - would be intrigued to hear songs with the non-Jani Lane singer, haven't heard any ever
Alice Cooper - Poison album era
    D.A.D.
    Bad Company - Brian Howe-era (mega-outlier, but...)
    Tesla

18 million? That's surprising. I mean, I know they were reasonably popular for a few years but ... 18 million? Unless, like, 15 million came from Japan or someplace like that, where Cindy-relly and, you know, Firehouse (Number 6 on SlappyFrog's list above) can still probably pack a large performance space or three.
  • slappyfrog
Want to be frightened? I've seen Firehouse in concert not once but twice! Once as a small club headliner and once as the support for...wait for it....Warrant, Trixter, and Firehouse....at Great America amusement park. And yes, I am ashamed I left Trixter off my List O' Self Absorption. ;)
  • Thanks for reading, everyone. EightE1: 18 million is legit, so says Wikipedia, and they have never been wrong about anything, but that figure includes worldwide sales of their Complete Catalog(TM).

SlappyFrog: You just budgeted the rest of this series. As it turns out Warrant and Tesla are next, and I will get to work immediately on EVERYONE ELSE YOU MENTIONED.

    Cheers, guys - J.
  • I unashamedly still rank Night Songs as one of my favorite albums of all time. Rcked it last week, still holds up. First cassette I went out and bought with my own money (6th grade graduation money went towards that and an Atari 7800, complete with some sweet games. I regret neither purchase!)

Long Cold Winter was great too.
