The Weekly Mixtape: Popdose Flashback ’91 — The Beat Mix

David Medsker February 25, 2011 10

In between more timely projects and content, the Popdose staff are dissecting albums from 1991, which happens to be one of my favorite years of music. It was also right around the time that I fell out of the remix window. There would be the occasional mix after 1992 that interested me, but by and large, my days as a commercial DJ ended here. To commemorate, I give you a MixMeister Express-created beat mix of some of my favorite tracks, remixed or otherwise, from 1991. For those who download the entire mix in one file, you receive a bonus track! See below.

1. Enigma – Sadeness Part I remixed version of a song from the album MCMXC A.D.
2. Siouxsie & the Banshees – Kiss Them for Me remixed version of a song from the album Superstition
3. School of Fish – 3 Strange Days remixed version of a song from the album School of Fish
4. Simply Red – Stars remixed version of a song from the album Stars
5. EMF – Unbelievable remixed version of a song from the album Scchubert Dip
6. PM Dawn – Paper Doll remixed version of a song from the album Of the Heart, Of the Soul and of the Cross: A Utopian Experience
7. Seal – Crazy remixed version of a song from the album Seal
8. Electronic – Get the Message from the album Electronic
9. Ride – Vapour Trail from the album Nowhere
10. My Bloody Valentine – Soon from the album Loveless
11. Blur – There’s No Other Way from the album Leisure
12. Big Audio Dynamite II – The Globe from the album The Globe
13. Jesus Jones – International Bright Young Thing remixed version of a song from the album Doubt
14. The Farm – Groovy Train remixed version of a song from the album Spartacus
15. 808 State – In Yer Face from the album ex:el
16. U2 – Even Better Than the Real Thing remixed version of a song from the album Achtung Baby
17. Erasure – Chorus from the album Chorus

Bonus track!
If you download the entire mix in one big-ass file, you receive a bonus track: EMF – “I Believe”
Popdose Flashback 1991 Beat Mix (w/ bonus track)

UPDATE 2/28 00:00: I have replaced the old download file with a new one because the mixes between tracks still needed work.

Love this mix! And on a purely technical note: using MixMeister Express has made the audio levels more consistent from song to song. I know that’s a function of being able to adjust the levels before the final mixdown, but it sounds great. Although, some may argue that the old turntable method separated the boys from the men and the girls from the women if a DJ could not only match the beat well, but also the audio levels — which, as you know, is not always easy.

MixMeister Express rules. Even more so because I got it for free. :)

That’s funny, since I was living in Boston at the time. WFNX ruled.

Oh, it totally did. I totally blame them for making me spend way too much money at all those new and used record stores in Kenmore and Harvard Squares. ;-)
