I seem to be in the minority here, but I just plain, flat-out disliked Adding Machine. I really liked the sets, the use of projection, and the sound and light design; but I found most of the songs to be forgettable and the story seemed to wander without a clear direction or purpose. It had some funny moments, most thanks to Ian Westerfer (Shrdlu), but it was primarily an uncomfortable 90 minutes that seemed to last for several hours.

I thought Joel Hatch (Mr. Zero) was great. He was funny and had tremendous presence on stage. Cyrilla Baer (Mrs. Zero) is an opera singer, and I’m sure that she’s an enormously talented one at that, but I just found her songs to be unbearable. Perhaps if you’re a fan of opera, you’ll appreciate them, but I’m not, so I found them downright painful.

Maybe it’s just too existential for my taste, or maybe, as Molly wrote, it was just too “weird in an avant-garde, twisted way.” Either way, Adding Machine is a show that I just can’t like, no matter how hard I try.
