Hey Matt,
Nice review and great show. I'm listening right now to Elton live in London 1973 and he's absolutely on top of his game at this point.

Anyone who doubts that he began as a rock and roller has to start with 11-17-70.

Matt: those R&R firsts are so special; you captured the moment brilliantly.

“…it took only three people and their respective instruments to get the job done.” [sigh] I want more of less. There are “space” in these songs…space for inflections, pauses, fills, melodies and room for the Feel of the song to be special. Ray Lamontagne is an artists that comes to mind who is keeping true to his original “less is more” musical ethos. As we all know, Reg went for the More is Not Enough play in all facets of life and song. [still damn good, though...]

I love Elton voice in this period. The Country Comforts voice: when ever I hear that, I think of this thick, carmel-y, rounded tone. Love it…

Very cool stuff Matt!

If my memory is correct, my first time seeing Elton In Concert was the Richfield Coliseum in 1976 touring in support of the Goodbye Yellow Brick Road album. He also opened that show with Funeral For a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding. I remember being pretty blown away by the show…I think he was at his peak back then.

You know what, as a young 'un, I wasn't aware until later that this unit was a power trio at the time of this era of touring. I don't know that I would go to see Elton now, but I saw him about 5 years ago, and he still put on a blistering show – opened with Funeral For A Friend/Love Lies Bleeding, which I wasn't expecting. Totally awesome.

I love these guys as a power trio. And as part of the 90's generation, I was shocked to find Ben Folds Five wasn't necessarily as unique as I thought when I first heard these '70 shows. Great pick to kick it off.
