Season two was definitely the break, where finally Cleese had an angle with what a pompous buffoon Fawlty really was and, subsequently, allowed him plenty of come-uppance. The first season of Fawlty had Cleese doing variations of his authority-figure characters from Python, only it became a little uncomfortable to have Basil Fawlty be such an ass over and over again. Season two was definitely the break, where finally Cleese had an angle with what a pompous buffoon Fawlty really was and, subsequently, allowed him plenty of come-uppance.

Always loved both series and was surprised there was so much time between them. The US knockoff, SNAVELY, with Harvey Korman and Bea Arthur, was unwatchable (I think there was another attempt at a redo, too. Neither proved to be a US OFFICE.) The warmer, FISH CALLED WANDA Cleese came a decade later.<br><br>The BBC also has a remastered set out of the excellent BLACKADDER (a show that came onto its own once the creative team shifted gears in the second season) and I think it was A&E that remastered the wonderful JEEVES AND WOOSTER, with Stephen Fry and Hugh Laurie. The first time I lived in Japan, about 20 years ago, I lived in the north of the main island. No one in my town spoke English, which was great for my Japanese language skills but enhanced the feeling of homesickness. Someone gave me a few VHS tapes with the entire Fawlty Towers series. I'd never heard of the show, despite being a huge Python fan. I can't remember EVER laughing so hard. I got the first issue of the series on DVD and loved it just as much. Great, great stuff.
