You didn't mention the Carver Edlund episode, which took a funny, offbeat premise (the show dealing with its own cult fandom) and made it a relevant part of the show's mythology. Even "The X-Files" never dared combine the two; their funny episodes were strictly stand-alone.

The current (final?) season, while trying to build upon the momentum, is shaping up to be only okay in comparison. I understand the appeal of trying to create an ultimate showdown, but it feels a little pat to me. The show works best when the leads play the third-party interlopers within the grand scheme, not the primary players.

I was a casual viewer of the first 3 seasons, but Season 4 was a monumental breakthrough for the show. The series began more as a monster-of-the-week show, but the creators quickly realized that the relationship between the brothers and the impact of the supernatural on their family was the real heart of the story. Even the free-standing MOTW episodes increasingly tied in to the family and mythological core as the writers used other situations to provide insight into the brothers or to mirror their circumstances. The writing, acting, and production values are all top-notch; this is the most under-appreciated show on any network.

Welcome to Supernatural! There's flashes of brilliance in the writing (as in the most recent episode, when Dean holds up a powerful trinket and quips "Pit stop at Mount Doom?" to his brother) and I anticipate some great things to come in the upcoming season.

We walked past Jared Padlecki (Sam) outside of the King's Road Cafe a while back - the man is an absolute giant. They must have to pull some Lord-of-the-Rings type film tricks just to get him in frame with Castiel.

I think the older material was more of the “monster of the week” variety – and unlike the X-Files, this show's foray into a grander scope has gone very well.
