Weeknight ’80s Dance Party: 10/12/11

Look, I know that it’s been more than a month since the last Weeknight ’80s Dance Party (and, actually, it was a Weekend ’80s Dance Party). I have no excuses, so I’m not even going to bother to explain myself. I’m still trying to figure out how often I want to put these posts together. Every other week still seems like a good idea, so I think I’m going to go with that until I run out of songs.

With Soundtrack Saturday on indefinite hiatus, I thought it might be fun to make a mix of songs from movie soundtracks. Some of these songs have showed up in past Soundtrack Saturday posts, some have not. I decided not to have more than one song from a particular movie, which was pretty difficult — there are a lot of good extended and dance mixes of songs from ’80s movies.

As you’re listening to this mix, I have one favor to ask of you: if you went out dancing at a club in the ’80s, and you remember some DJ playing the Club Mix of “The NeverEnding Story,” please share details of this experience in the comments. I really need to know if this is something that actually happened.

Tina Turner – One of the Living (Special Dance Mix) (from Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome)
Harold Faltermeyer – Axel F (12″ Mix) (from Beverly Hills Cop)
New Order – Shellshock (Extended Mix) (from Pretty In Pink)
Furniture – Brilliant Mind (Extended Mix) (from Some Kind of Wonderful)
Limahl – The NeverEnding Story (Club Mix) (from The NeverEnding Story)
Peter Gabriel – In Your Eyes (Special Mix) (from Say Anything…)
Spandau Ballet – True (12″ Mix) (from Sixteen Candles)
Simple Minds – Don’t You forget About Me (Extended Mix) (from The Breakfast Club)
Huey Lewis & the News – Back In Time (Original Extended 12″ Mix) (from Back to the Future)
Billy Ocean – When the Going Gets Tough, The Tough Get Going (Club Mix) (from The Jewel of the Nile)
The Time – The Bird (Dance Remix) (from Purple Rain)
Madonna – Causing A Commotion (Movie House Mix) (from Who’s That Girl)
E.G. Daily – Mind Over Matter (Remix) (from Summer School)
Cyndi Lauper – Goonies ‘R’ Good Enough (Dance Remix) (from The Goonies)
Irene Cara – Flashdance (What a Feeling) (12″ Mix) (from Flashdance)

Thanks for another great mix! That Furniture track is phenomenal.

I’d also recommend checking out the 12″ of Chaz Jankel’s “Number One” (Real Genius) [], the International Mix of Howard Jones’ “Like to Get to Know You Well” (Better Off Dead) [], LL Cool J’s “Rock the Bells 12″ [Krush Groove] (which includes the “Jack the Ripper, King Hercules” line sampled 3 years later on the legendary “Jack the Ripper,” the B-side of Less Than Zero’s “Goin’ Back to Cali”) “Big Audio Dynamite’s 12″ of “BAD” (Ferris Bueller’s Day Off) [], Ice-T’s “Colors (Extended Version)” [] and the extended mix of “Fascination Street,” by The Cure (Lost Angels)…

I don’t recall hearing “The Neverending Story” at a dance club in the ’80s.

I actually have most of those mixes and a few of them almost made it into this mix. But, alas, I try to keep these mixes to a certain song count, so some had to get cut. I’ll probably do another soundtrack song mix in the future, so they’ll probably show up.

A week after you last popped up, I checked and you weren’t here. I hate that.

I’ve always felt that “One Of The Living” is a WAY underrated song from Miss Turner. It’s one of my favorites, and is actually a regular on my iPod Shuffle. Interesting that (as far as I know, and I’m too lazy to research in depth), it’s never appeared on any of her many greatest hits compilations, and I want to say it made it to like, #16 on the Hot 100 or something.
