The original was indeed a rave classic. I heard it played out at raves. Typically placed in the early morning hours when the sun was rising and everyone was more swaying, than shuffling.

The reverb-drenched Funky Drummer break is what made this track. There was a white label mix getting around at the time that extended the break and added in “Ah Yeah!”'s and “Check This Out!”'s over the top. Awesome stuff.

Dakeyne entirely missed the point. His intro poked fun at one of the most sampled and classic breaks of all time… then he proceeded to recreat the whole thing with a cheesy Bontempi keyboard and flimsy four on the floor beat? He obviously wasnt happy being a DMC remixer and wanted to be an artist in his own right. Im sorry – even the replayed Hey Jude outro couldnt save his abomination or a remix. It has not held up with time – whereas the original has (it has been reissued on vinyl and appeared on countless mix compilations).

I like a lot of those records (though Like a Prayer and March came out in 1989). I guess I was referring more to popular music, which was dreadful. Most of those records, you'll concede, didn't sell.

I also still maintain that Violator is overrated. And I love Depeche Mode.

There is just no other way to say it: 1990 was an awful, awful year for music.

You're seriously overgeneralizing w/ this statement, you do realize:
Heaven Or Las Vegas, Wrong Way Up, Twin Peaks OST, Violator, Jordan: The Comeback, Bellybutton, Listen Without Prejudice, Like a Prayer, Goodbye Jumbo, Toy Matinee, Behaviour, March, Rust In Peace, Rubaiyat, etc.

Sure, the digital superslickness often backfired at times, but there's a certain vein of pop that shone during that time.

I must have a tremendous misunderstanding of rave culture. Would any of these remixes EVER get played at a rave? Every single version of this song is simply awful.

Thats a good summary of 1990 In Music. I remember it as the year that Wax Trax, Nettwerk, and 4AD all began their slow painful declines. And the year of “Love Shack.” Blech.

Madchester was, I guess, the year's saving grace, although stuff like Candyflip and the Soup Dragons–both of which I had in heavy rotation in '90–sound kinda flimsy today.

Still, i nominate 1992 as Worst Year Ever For Popular Music.

Madstock was great, actually. A classic, no. But it's a great indie dance album, indicative of the Madchester times. I loved them, I loved the scene. Made me want to become a DJ actually. Side note: one of the guys went on to produce Britpop bands in the 90's, namely The Charlatans.

I still love that DMC mix today as much as I did back in the early 90s. Fun stuff.
