ah what sweet memories (some more cloudy than others) i have of dancing to this mix of "fairground" (remixed by rollo and sister bliss of faithless) in clubs til the sun had long since been up. this mix sounds great at ear splitting decibels when you're not, how you say, in your right frame of mind.

re PSB, true a lot of mixes of their songs aren't up to par, but a favorite of mine is the peter rauhofer mix of "i don't know what you want but i can't give it anymore." one of their best.....

It got to the point where I would only buy PSB remixes if they were done by the band themselves. Their mix of “Discoteca,” for example. That's awesome.

The saddest casualties for me offhand: Boy George's “The Crying Game” (a PSB production even!) and Annie Lennox' “No More 'I Love You's”. The most immediate exception (from the 80s, natch): the Vixenvitesse mix of Erasure's “Victim of Love”.

I try not to think about tempo-jacking. It just pisses me off. I remember buying the remixes to Madonna's “Music” and thinking, “What the fuck is this?”

Pleasure's all mine, sir. It was a nice opportunity to reacquaint myself with the dance culture of a decade ago. My affection for the late-70s/80s trumps them all, but I'm not stuck entirely in that era.

However, you did bring up two reasons I feel increasingly alienated by the remix culture of the past 15-odd years: the "rat-tat-tat-tat-taaaaaaaaaaat-boom!" cliché and the tendency to rewrite rather than remix. (I'll add tempo-jacking to that list...so many potential chill-out gems sped up for the house freaks.) The "Lemon" remix is a true exception and remains my favorite U2 club record, even if they didn't retain Eno's cool backing vox.
