Who’s Got a Question for Andy Partridge, Then?

Will Harris April 28, 2009 25

Popdose is proud to announce that, in the wake of Ape Records reissuing the Dukes of Stratosphear’s 25 O’Clock EP and their subsequent full-length, Psonic Psunspot, the artist occasionally known as Sir John Johns…we’re speaking of Andy Partridge, of course…has agreed to answer questions posed to him by Popdose readers.

The date of the actual interview has yet to be set, but until it takes place, the floor will be open for your queries to Mr. Partridge…and by “floor,” we mean the Reply section below.

Curious about the origins of your favorite XTC song? Anxious to get an update on the status of his long-discussed collaborative album with Robyn Hitchcock? Wondering if there’s any truth to the Wikipedia claim that he provided the voice of a cricket commentator in an episode of “Family Guy”?

Here’s your big chance to pose your questions to a true musical legend. Take advantage of it!

Are you, in fact, the man who murdered love?

  • CG

What was it like working with Susan Dey?

    KIDDING!

What do you think of the covers of “Scissor Man” and “Making Plans for Nigel” by Primus? What are some covers of your work you've heard and liked?

  • CarmencitaB

Would you please kiss and make up with Mr Moulding so we can have the pleasure of listening to another XTC album? Please, pretty please?

  • The Border Patrol

Will you please consider reviving The Bubblegum Album idea? (Not as an XTC thing, but as an Andy Partridge-with-maybe-some-special guests thing.) I'll put in my pre-order right now….

Ask him when his solo record is coming out ;-)

    I await with longing.

  • Daryll Collins

Would you consider working again with Todd Rundgren? I'd love to hear an album collaboration.

It was my understanding that Colin pretty much removed himself from all his former associates and has chosen not to reveal his current addresses to them. Now, I don't know if that's just dry English wit masking the possibility he told everyone to F-off, or he did, in fact, go to ground.

Having spat all that out, I concur with you and would hope Dave would be welcomed with open somethings as well.

I heard it reported that some new recording was done by Andy and Colin on some uncompleted XTC demos, for upcoming reissue packages — is that true? I'm super psyched if it is.

How did (do) you feel about the “Testimonial Dinner” tribute?

A lot of us see Oranges and Lemons as seminal work — what, if anything, would you have done differently with that record in hindsight and how does it hold up in your mind?

OH, and thanks for clueing us into the Milk and Honey Band…

    Cheers

    Andy,

When are you coming back to Chicago? If it's summertime we will take you sailing on Lake Michigan.

If I have a question, it's where does the inspiration come from, especially late in the game? For instance, after a long run of critically praised albums, things that have pop fanatics falling on themselves over, we get Apple Venus Vol. One and the one/two of “I Can't Own Her” and “Harvest Festival”. Now, I know the real-life backstory (Andy's divorce) but these two songs just reduce me every time I hear them. Where in the world does that come from?

A weird, multi-faceted question, but what would you expect from a friend of a friend? Part one: Are you planning on working with Barry Andrews again in the near future (as Monstrance, with Shriekback, or in some other unholy incarnation)? Part two: Do you ever miss the Psychedelic days of the Dukes and have you ever seriously considered resurrecting them in some incarnation or three? Part three: Would you consider enjoying a spot of homemade macaroni-n-cheese, my treat, if I ever make it back to England?

    1:Fanno vs. Ibanez?

2:Do you remember taking a few polariods during the oranges and lemons sessions?

3:What the hell is a butter pie?

  • Mark French

Now that you've resumed working with Virgin Records, will we see a career-spanning DVD of promotional videos?

  • Fred "Fumble Fingers" Hamilton

How the **** do you play the opening riff to Meccanic Dancing?

  • http://www.olliehalsall.co.uk Moose

When did you first become aware of guitarist Ollie Halsall and in what ways has he influenced your playing?

  • Paul

You raved about Ollie Halsall in Guitar Player a few years ago. We know that he played a huge direct role in Kevin Ayers' solo career. What was it about Ollie/Patto that you took into your own music

  • http://www.yarnivore.com/francis Francis

Oh, and if I get myself to Swindon somehow, will you cowrite some songs with me? I'm unvirtuosic but persistent. And it's probably time I wrote another musical.

  • http://www.popdose.com DwDunphy

Ollie Halsall! Funny that The Rutles and The Dukes share a passing resemblance.

  • not to scale

Did you have anything to do with the Scrotal Scratch Mix from Jester Japes and the Jesticles?

  • el bandito

When writing “Dear God” did you really mean what you wrote or is it just a song? Do you believe in God?

    Questions for Andy:

    1) Whatever live XTC I have heard has been amazing – do you have the ability to release any more of the live recordings from when XTC was performing? I know some stuff has come out on “Coat of Many Cupboards”, “Transistor Blast”, etc but would love it if more could be released.

    2) Can you describe your demo process, and how it has evolved? I know your early demos were you stomping and strumming, and they evolved into very well-developed recordings. What do you record first? Drum track? Also, how do you know when it is “done”?

    3) Will you ever consider selling your art (drawings, paintings, etc)?
