While I generally enjoy the cover albums (“Timeless Vol. 2″ being an exception), I do wish he — and other singer/songwriters — would refrain from doing them. Look what Rod Stewart has become: a singer of nursing home Karaoke.

Oh man, see I'm on the opposite fence here. I think this is the album he should have been doing for years instead of songbook crap or whatever it's been. He's got a good voice for contemporary R&B and while not without its cliches, I think the album is his best record in ages. Unfortunately, I don't know exactly who he's targeting with this. This is a VH1 special for a guy that already has the young crowd. which he clearly does not.

I still think in 10 years when the Popdose guide to Michael Bolton comes out, this is going to be a sneaky surprise in the middle of crap.

However, I too am strangely put off by the fact that I may actually continue to listen to the record for pleasure.
