Friday Five : |ˈfrÄ«dÄ – fÄ«v| : On the sixth day of every week, I hit the shuffle button in iTunes and share the first five tracks and thought for each track. Sometimes there is a playlist involved, occasionally we’ll have a guest, but most of the time it’s just me. The rest is up to you, our friends and readers! Fire up the media player of your choice and share the first five random track of your shuffle in the comments.
The Five:
“Hold on to the Nights” by Richard Marx (from Billboard Top Hits: 1988, 1994)
Marx’s melancholy provided the perfect soundtrack to the summer of my discontent.
“You Make My Dreams” by Hall & Oates (from VH-1 Behind the Music: The Daryl Hall and John Oates Collection, 2002)
This is undeniably catchy, though may rank as one of my least-favorite Hall & Oates tunes.
“Did Ye Get Healed?” by Van Morrison (from A Night in San Francisco (disc 1), 1994)
Am I the only one who can’t hear this without immediately being reminded of Tom Jones’ biggest hit? Dammit, now I’ve got “It’s Not Unusual” stuck in my head.
“The First Days of Spring” by Noah and the Whale (from The First Days of Spring, 2009)
Seems appropriate, no? The Northeastern U.S. is seeing its first signs of warming up, the trees are starting to bloom and it’s almost warm enough to venture out in shorts.
“Stealing Tomorrow” by Great Lake Swimmers (from The Legion Sessions, 2010)
I’m relatively certain that Great Lake Swimmers have shuffled up before. They fall into that singer/songwriter/sad bastard niche rather nicely. Lead swimmer Tony Dekker’s voice floats perfectly above the simple acoustic guitar accompaniment.
What’s on your shuffle today?
