Friday Five : |ˈfrÄ«dÄ – fÄ«v| : On the sixth day of every week, I hit the shuffle button in iTunes and share the first five tracks and thought for each track. Sometimes there is a playlist involved, occasionally we’ll have a guest, but most of the time it’s just me. The rest is up to you, our friends and readers! Fire up the media player of your choice and share the first five random track of your shuffle in the comments.
The Five:
Editor’s Note: Now I know that you guys are all watching the clock, hoping the boss lets you go early, so I’ll keep this brief. (Because, you know, I’m waiting on the same thing.) – MP
“It Doesn’t Matter Two (instrumental)” by Depeche Mode (from A Question of Lust, 1991)
Well this is an odd way to ease into this week’s Friday Five. This bit of music sounds like it would have been at home in David Lynch’s DUNE.
“Brass Neck” by DJ Food (from A Recipe for Disaster, 1995)
…and another instrumental! This time we’re invoking the holy funking spirit of The Godfather of Soul, Mr. James Brown. So much of the mid-’90s electronica lacked soul that when cats like Cut Chemist, DJ Shadow, and—to an extenxt—DJ Food injected breaks from the likes of Bob James it made you jump out of your chair and pay attention. I still spin this record once or twice a year.
“Inside Out” by Crowded House (from Intriguer, 2010)
Perfectly pleasant but otherwise forgettable entry from Mr. Finn and company.
“I Know It’s True” by James Brown (from Star Time (disc 1: Mr. Dynamite), 1991)
Ladies and gentlemen… The Godfather of Soul, Mr. James Brown! The shuffle gods are playing with my emotions today.
“Born to Wander” by Rare Earth (from The Complete Motown Singles, Volume 10: 1970 (disc 55), 2008)
I’m positive I’ve heard this song, yet I can’t place where I’ve heard it (other than on my iTunes.)
Oh, there’s the boss! Have a great Memorial Day Weekend, y’all!
What’s on your shuffle today?
