Friday Five : |ˈfrÄ«dÄ – fÄ«v| : On the sixth day of every week, I hit the shuffle button in iTunes and share the first five tracks and thought for each track. Sometimes there is a playlist involved, occasionally we’ll have a guest, but most of the time it’s just me. The rest is up to you, our friends and readers! Fire up the media player of your choice and share the first five random track of your shuffle in the comments.
The Five:
“Intro” by The XX (from XX, 2009)
I suppose starting with a tune called “Intro” a pretty auspicious way to kick off a Friday Five.
“Switchblade” by Incubus (from If Not Now, When?, 2011)
I can openly admit that I hung in with Incubus two records longer than I should have. We all have those acts that we keep hoping can recapture the spark that made you like them in the first place. I’m not suggesting that I’d want regurgitation of their best work, rather the spirit that embodied that work and made it special.
“Don’t You Know That?” by Luther Vandross (from Never Too Much, 1981)
While not as big a pop hit as the record’s title track, this single has everything that made Vandross great.
“Crush on You (remix)” by Lil’ Kim (from Not Tonight, 1997)
This is one shiny track suit away from being one of Diddy’s most Puff Daddiest. Lil’ Cease kills this track dead, though that’s no surprise; Biggie sounds like he’s falling asleep with his delivery of the hook, and Kim… well, she’s Kim. Mason Betha even gets a writing credit on this cut *cough* ghostwriting Kim’s verse *cough*.
“For Me This is Heaven” by Jimmy Eat World (from Clarity, 1999)
Jimmy Eat World was one of “my” bands. You know, the band that you were listening to before they were “everyones” band. The Internet has pretty much flattened this phenomenon, and I kind of miss those days.
What’s on your shuffle today?
