Welcome to another volume of Found On… Every week I’ll search Bandcamp, SoundCloud, NoiseTrade, Spotify, YouTube and other music sites for new-ish, under-the-radar music that I like, which I in turn share with you. You might like it or you might hate it. You never know.
First off, I present to you the first great earworm of the summer of 2012. “Oh, Emily” from Jukebox the Ghost is one of the catchiest tunes I’ve heard in a long, long time. Big fat crunchy pop guitars with a great singalong chorus. Roll down the window and sing at the top of your lungs. Repeat.
Their new album Safe Travels will be released June 12th and you can pre-order the album right here. And because the band is apparently cool as hell, you can download a free copy of ‘”Oh, Emily” for the cost of an email.
I haven’t been able to find out much information on She Rose. A friend on Facebook posted this a couple weeks ago and I’ve been hooked since. As far as I can tell, they don’t even have a website. Just their Bandcamp page. I did find a story about how they formed via nypress, who called them “slow, sad, rhythm, blues, country and folk.” The harmonies on this record rival the Watson Twins. Great stuff.
Another week, another fine suggestion from Twitter friend @colindeval. This week he brings to my attention of the Baltimore band Lower Dens. Paste Magazine says about their new album, Nootropics: “Connects layered loops and trippy chants with catchy rock ’n’ roll arrangements, delivering a pure punch of sonic bliss.”
After being called a twerp throughout most of my youth/life, it comes as no surprise that I like a band called Twerps. It should also come as no surprise that they look like a bunch of obnoxious little hipsters. These three songs come from the Australian bands’ self-titled debut album, released last fall. They’re still a little rough around the edges, but once they figure out what they’re doing, I think more people will take notice.
Ross Flournoy has been around the block. After releasing two albums with the Broken West on Merge Records, he’s starting anew with Apex Manor. According to NoiseTrade, “In an effort to spark inspiration, he entered an online songwriting contest hosted by NPR. The result of that initial effort, ‘Under the Gun,’ became the cornerstone to the first Apex Manor album, The Year of Magical Drinking. This compilation features songs from that album alongside choice tracks from both albums by the Broken West, including a rare demo version of ‘Perfect Games,’ connecting the dots between both bands.”
I don’t know where you live, but here in Milwaukee it’s been miserable and rainy all spring. So if you’re looking for that perfect “rainy day, get your groove on” type of music look no further than Full Crate & Mar. Apparently this is over two years old, but it’s new to me. They even released a full-on professional video for “She Was Fly.”
That’s it for this week. Leave your love, hate, or general thoughts on the bands I found in the comments. And if you know of any bands I should feature, let me know.
