Show me a hero and I’ll show you another awesome Popdose giveaway! We here at the dose have a DVD copy of Show Me a Hero, the stellar HBO miniseries now available to buy. 2015’s “it” actor, Oscar Issac (Ex-Machina, a little something called Star Wars), gives a Golden Globe-winning performance as Nick Wasicsko, the young mayor of Yonkers, NY faced with a federal court order mandate that he must build a small number of low-income housing units in the white neighborhoods of his town. His attempt to do so tears the city apart, paralyzes the municipal government and, ultimately, destroys him.
The mini-series is based upon the 1999 critically-acclaimed nonfiction book of the same name by Lisa Belkin. David Simon, one this century’s giants of television (he created The Wire, Generation Kill and Treme) partnered with his longtime collaborator William F. Zorzi and Academy Award winner Paul Haggis (Crash) to bring the adaptation to HBO last year.
The all star cast also includes Catherine Keener, Alfred Molina, Winona Ryder, Peter Reigert, LaTanya Richardson-Jackson, Bob Balaban, Carla Quevedo, Jim Belushi and Jon Bernthal. The six-part series is available now on Blu-ray, DVD and Digital HD. The box sets include an extended making-of featurette and the Digital HD includes a recording of a Department of Housing and Urban Development panel featuring Simon.
To qualify for this contest, simply answer Mr. Malchus’ latest trivia question:
Name the landmark police drama that gave David Simon his chance to cut his teeth in television?
Hint: It was based on a book he wrote.
Send your answer to malchus@popdose.com by 5 PM (PT) Friday Feb. 12. One winner will be drawn at random.
Good luck, and thanks for reading Popdose!
