Los Angeles-based rockers Electric Parlor promise a deviation from the norm and a trip back in time. ”We feel like one of Electric Parlor’s missions is to re-open people’s eyes to the blues, the way bands did in the ’60s and ’70s,” says guitarist Kris Far. ”And not in a subjective way…we’re a working class band and have taken a lot of risks to make this a reality. We believe that this reckless abandon — to fight for what we feel is ours — translates into our music.”
In that same vein, the female-fronted quartet pooled their dough in order to record their 2013 debut album in analog-to-tape format. Now, it’s finally getting its destined release on vinyl, with cover art that evokes artists like Janis Joplin and the Jimi Hendrix Experience. Indeed, what’s inside the sleeve also hearkens back to that late-’60s blue-eyed-soul psychedelia that would have sounded at home on the Sunset Strip circa 1968.
But don’t label Electric Parlor as a throwback band; where culling so much from past sounds might be hokey for lesser bands, they manage to take the best of a bygone time, twist it, and make it their own. ”We want to be part of the ongoing evolution of rock n’ roll” says drummer Zachary Huling. ”Being a part of this lineage is what drives us forward.”
