12 episodes…Jesus Christ! How can it be that we’ve been getting together for 12 full months now, dedicating ourselves to bringing you the very best in pop culture discussion/mother jokes? Well, the technical answer is: we haven’t, ’cause we’re taking this month off. Consider it a vacation for the three of us, except Dave edited what you’re about to hear and Jason did the show notes. Okay, consider it a vacation for Jeff, that bastard.

Every month, we get on “the Skype” with each other and shoot the shit for about two hours. Most of our shows are (mercifully) around an hour long, which means that plenty of stuff doesn’t make it to the podcast. Good stuff, too — sometimes it just doesn’t fit the topic or someone gets tongue-tied (usually Jeff’s mom), or we just don’t have enough time to include a particular dialogue. Dave has been insightful enough to hold on to what he considers the best bits from the past year and has compiled them into today’s episode, which also includes just about every bumper Terje has ever recorded for Popdose (as well as one by Dw. Dunphy). So please, give a click below, and listen to some of our kick-ass outtakes!

The Popdose Podcast, Episode 12: Outtakes (49:52, 57.1 MB), featuring Jeff Giles, Jason Hare, and Dave Lifton.

Show Notes

0:00 Intro: Dave welcomes us to the outtakes episode, giving all sorts of bullshit excuses as to why we couldn’t be bothered to get together for a simple two-hour chat.

2:37 Awkward masturbation talk.

3:08 Jeff discusses Josh Rouse and his similarities to Sting and Lucy Van Pelt.

5:52 Dave once again struggles to get through a punchline. Michael Buble‘s pitiful cover of “Heartache Tonight” is also unfortunately mentioned.

9:22 Alan O’Day (genuinely nice guy!) and Wing (stop the nonsense!). We discuss her “Beat It” performance on a New Zealand morning show, so awesome that we have to embed it here.

This somehow brings us to Liza Minelli’s cover of “Single Ladies” and, of course, her work as “Lucille 2” on Arrested Development. (Jason’s note: I just lost 15 minutes watching unrelated Liza Minnelli videos on YouTube.)

22:23 Dave talks about how his windbreaker reminds him of his own mortality.

24:12 A discussion about the seemingly endless conflict between Israel and Palestine. Just kidding! Mom jokes.

25:08 Jeff discusses his upcoming interview with artist Mike Salisbury and his photography for Randy Newman’s Born Again. Dave and Jason take it to the lowest common denominator with the Randy Newman parody on Family Guy. Also discussed: wedding dance songs, Bar Mitzvahs, the excellent Bar Mitzvah Disco book and the Village People.

36:13 Dave discusses Paul and Storm’s The 25 Days of Newman, and we talk about possible Mellowmas candidates.

EnDOSEment Outtake

39:25 There’s only been one Endosement that has ever been cut from the podcast, and not because of actual content, but because Jason lost the ability to speak coherently. Jeff, to his credit, tried to save it with a digression into Paul McCartney’s Driving Rain. (Thanks, Jeff.) Jason also got vulnerable for a minute, leading Jeff and Dave to pounce on him like a pack of wolves. In any case, the endosement is for the fantastic Gabe Dixon Band. (Song: The Gabe Dixon Band, “All Will Be Well.”)

Wrappin’ It Up

Thanks so much for listening to our episode of outtakes — not bad, huh? We’ll be back shortly with all new content, but until then, please leave us some comments! Also, don’t forget to leave us a review on iTunes, and to visit our Facebook fan page as well as the Popdose Twitter feed. Thanks for listening and we’ll see you in September!
