Name That Tune, Game Seven

Scraps February 22, 2008 71

Hey everybody. Welcome to the seventh week of Name That Tune at Popdose. Let’s get the rules out of the way first:

The Rules (subject to modification in future games):

  • MAXIMUM THREE GUESSES between updates of the list, to give everyone a chance to play.
  • Clip 23 may only be guessed once between updates.
  • While I’m not going to be a stickler for spelling and punctuation, you must guess the correct musician and song title to a close approximation. For those new to the game, here’s how it works: I have uploaded twenty-three very brief song clips. Most of the songs are well known; none of them are obscure. The clips are drawn from a variety of styles and decades. It’s likely that you’ll find a few of them instantly recognizable, while a few others you won’t know at all (but other people will). There are two parts to this game. The first is guessing the songs themselves. The second part is guessing the puzzle song (clip 23). The first 22 songs are related to each other in a way that gives a clue to the identity of the puzzle song. (And of course, if the puzzle song is guessed early, that ought to help nail down the rest of the songs.)Some songs may go unguessed the first time round. If songs remain unguessed after a day, I’ll upload longer clips.

    And here are the clips:

    1. clip 1
    2. clip 2
    3. clip 3
    4. clip 4
    5. clip 5
    6. clip 6

Thanks! This is by far the most songs I've ever known on one of these games. And thanks to Ken for the helpful hint on the puzzle song.

Good job on the puzzle. Lots of tough ones, including the last remaining one. I wanna say it's something by Eric Clapton, but it doesn't sound familiar.

21 sure sounds Townshend-esque, hence my Thunderclap Guess, then I tried The Who's “Amazing Jouney/Sparks” to no avail. Am I in the ballpark?

Is 21 Keep On Growing by Derek and the Dominos?

    • http://www.deselbybowen.com/parlando/ Scraps

Not Townsend or the Who or Derek & the Dominoes.

      Thanks! Not Clapton, though.

If you email jefito at popdose dot com, I believe he has a prize for you.

      Maybe something by Traffic?

    • Rank Outsider

I'm thinking Traffic also. Can't place the song though.

    • http://www.deselbybowen.com/parlando/ Scraps

It's not Traffic. This solo musicians popularity outstrips Winwood's.

This song was written (though this version was not his recording) by a man who also wrote hits for Elvis Presley (two of his best-known late hits), Bobby Goldsboro, Dolly Parton, Glen Campbell, Nancy Sinatra, and Bobby Bare.

This song was also covered by Blue Swede, though I doubt that information will help anyone.

    • Rank Outsider

Is it Something's Burning by The First Edition (Kenny Rodgers)? I know that Mac Davis is the songwriter.

    • http://www.deselbybowen.com/parlando/ Scraps

      Hurray! That's the last one.

The Blue Swede clue was key. I thought I had eclectic musical tastes. Yours is so broad and deep we are not even in the same neighborhood.
