Name That Tune, Game Seven

Hey everybody. Welcome to the seventh week of Name That Tune at Popdose. Let’s get the rules out of the way first:

The Rules (subject to modification in future games):

  • MAXIMUM THREE GUESSES between updates of the list, to give everyone a chance to play.
  • Clip 23 may only be guessed once between updates.
  • While I’m not going to be a stickler for spelling and punctuation, you must guess the correct musician and song title to a close approximation. For those new to the game, here’s how it works: I have uploaded twenty-three very brief song clips. Most of the songs are well known; none of them are obscure. The clips are drawn from a variety of styles and decades. It’s likely that you’ll find a few of them instantly recognizable, while a few others you won’t know at all (but other people will). There are two parts to this game. The first is guessing the songs themselves. The second part is guessing the puzzle song (clip 23). The first 22 songs are related to each other in a way that gives a clue to the identity of the puzzle song. (And of course, if the puzzle song is guessed early, that ought to help nail down the rest of the songs.)Some songs may go unguessed the first time round. If songs remain unguessed after a day, I’ll upload longer clips.

    And here are the clips:

    1. clip 1
    2. clip 2
    3. clip 3
    4. clip 4
    5. clip 5
    6. clip 6

    11. clip 11

The Blue Swede clue was key. I thought I had eclectic musical tastes. Yours is so broad and deep we are not even in the same neighborhood.

23 Liz Phair - Strange Loop (eric)

Note that the titles and artists of the songs form a loop of references from song to song.

See you all next week. Thanks for playing!
    • Hurray! That's the last one.
    • Rank Outsider
Is it Something's Burning by The First Edition (Kenny Rodgers)? I know that Mac Davis is the songwriter.
    • It's not Traffic. This solo musicians popularity outstrips Winwood's.

This song was written (though this version was not his recording) by a man who also wrote hits for Elvis Presley (two of his best-known late hits), Bobby Goldsboro, Dolly Parton, Glen Campbell, Nancy Sinatra, and Bobby Bare.

This song was also covered by Blue Swede, though I doubt that information will help anyone.
    • Rank Outsider
I'm thinking Traffic also. Can't place the song though.
    • MichaelFortes
      Maybe something by Traffic?
    • Not Townsend or the Who or Derek & the Dominoes.
    • Rank Outsider
Is 21 Keep On Growing by Derek and the Dominos?
    • 21 sure sounds Townshend-esque, hence my Thunderclap Guess, then I tried The Who's "Amazing Jouney/Sparks" to no avail. Am I in the ballpark?
    • It is "Strange Loop"! Congratulations, Eric! (I don't know whether Ken gets an assist because I don't know whether Eric needed it.)

One more song -- 21 -- by a hugely popular solo artist, who was in two moderately successful bands before that. This is the second of those two bands.
    • Eric
Thanks! This is by far the most songs I've ever known on one of these games. And thanks to Ken for the helpful hint on the puzzle song.

Good job on the puzzle. Lots of tough ones, including the last remaining one. I wanna say it's something by Eric Clapton, but it doesn't sound familiar.
    • Thanks! Not Clapton, though.

If you email jefito at popdose dot com, I believe he has a prize for you.
    • Ah, I see Ken does get an assist. Thanks for narrowing it down!
    • Yup, that's it Eric. Damn you. I get an assist though, right?
    • Eric
You should. The song had a familiar sound but I couldn't quite place it until your comment about Exile in Guyville.
    • Eric
      23. Strange Loop - Liz Phair
    • Not Thunderclap Newman.
    • 21. Might be Thunderclap Newman?

      23. Definitely from Exile In Guyville (can't mistake that Brad Wood production) but the songs escapes me.

And for the record, I just saw this now and without looking got 1,2,4,7,10,18,19,22.
    • I have uploaded longer clips of the two remaining songs:

    • The four remaining regular songs are all more than thirty-five years old.

    • Correct:
      "Dreams"
      "Here, There and Everywhere"

To be clear, jackfear -- I admit it's not obvious, and I should figure out a way to make it clearer -- when I say "three guesses between updates of the list", an update of the list means me reposting the whole list with the correct guesses so far -- which I am about to do -- not just my answering the guesses as they go.
    • Apologies. I thought that might be the case, but I wasn't sure; guess I should have erred on the side of caution.

      Sorry, everyone.
    • And you have three more guesses available now.
