Friday Five : |ˈfrÄ«dÄ – fÄ«v| : On the sixth day of every week, I hit the shuffle button in iTunes and share the first five tracks and thought for each track. Sometimes there is a playlist involved, occasionally we’ll have a guest, but most of the time it’s just me. The rest is up to you, our friends and readers! Fire up the media player of your choice and share the first five random track of your shuffle in the comments.
The Five:
Daydream Believer” by The Monkees (from Now and Then, 1995)
I don’t know that I have a single witty quip to share about this tune. My only free association where The Monkees are concerned is the fact that my mother loved them, and the memory of Davy Jones appearing on The Brady Bunch. Granted, Davy didn’t perform “Daydream Believer” when he appeared to fan the flames of Marcia Brady’s passion, but it’s Davy all the same. That said, I love this tune without a hint of irony.
“Shake Your Halo Down” by Shudder to Think (from X-French Tee Shirt, 1994)
Damn, another short tune! I barely have time to peck out the title and artist. I really enjoy the hell out of Shudder to Think, and often look at them as proto-Emo; though I know it is more appropriate to classify them as post-hardcore. What the hell does that even mean?
“Supertzar” by Black Sabbath (from Sabotage, 1975)
Choirs?! Glockenspiels?! Acoustic guitars?! What the hell is going on here?! I’m going to go out on a limb—and a short one at that—and say that this is proof that drugs are bad.
“Suddenly” by Sean Maguire (from Top of the Pops 1995, 2008)
Ouch! Talk about a bit of shuffle-induced whiplash. I have no excuses here, this is plain awful. This is beyond awful, and yet I’m going to suffer through all four minutes and three seconds of it, just for you all.
“Mother Says” by Joe Walsh (from The Best of Joe Walsh, 1978)
Okay, I’ve clearly angered the shuffle Gods. I’m packing this up before I end up listening to something truly awful.
What’s on your shuffle today?
