Friday Five : |ˈfrÄ«dÄ – fÄ«v| : On the sixth day of every week, I hit the shuffle button in iTunes and share the first five tracks and thought for each track. Sometimes there is a playlist involved, occasionally we’ll have a guest, but most of the time it’s just me. The rest is up to you, our friends and readers! Fire up the media player of your choice and share the first five random track of your shuffle in the comments.
The Five:
“Put Down the Weapon (feat. Yami Bolo)” by Capleton (from Reggae Gold 1997, 1997)
Oh mid-to-late-’90s obsession with Reggae, how I (occasionally) miss thee. If I recall correctly—and I’ll be the first to admit that my memory is a bit like swiss cheese for a few of these years—I purchased this collection for Beenie Man’s “Girls Dem Sugar (remix),” a DJ staple in those days, and found more than a few exceptional tracks hidden among the bunch.
“crushcrushcrush” by Paramore (from The Final RIOT!, 2008)
There is zero guilt in my enjoyment of Paramore. Regardless of your opinion of the politics of the band it is hard to argue that Miss Williams is the singular driving force behind the band’s success.
“Love of My Life Worldwide” by Erykah Badu (from Worldwide Underground, 2003)
A remix of the already exceptional “Love of My Life (An Ode to Hip-Hop),” “Love of My Life Worldwide” features Queen Latifah, Bahamadia and Angie Stone over a base of “Funk You Up” by The Sequence. A bit more old school than the original.
“Swans” by Camera Obscura (from My Maudlin Career, 2009)
Twee!
“Don’t Make Me Over” by The Swinging Blue Jeans (from Top of the Pops 1966, 2007)
I’ll admit that I had to go to Wikipedia to figure out who the hell The Swinging Blue Jeans were.
Brevity, thy name is trying to fit a Friday Five in before the lunch break ends!
What’s on your shuffle today?
