Friday Five : |ˈfrÄ«dÄ – fÄ«v| : On the sixth day of every week, I hit the shuffle button in iTunes and share the first five tracks and thought for each track. Sometimes there is a playlist involved, occasionally we’ll have a guest, but most of the time it’s just me. The rest is up to you, our friends and readers! Fire up the media player of your choice and share the first five random track of your shuffle in the comments.
The Five:
“Congregation” by Foo Fighters (from Sonic Highways, 2014)
I didn’t immediately connect with Sonic Highways; it wasn’t until I started watching the HBO documentary that the songs started to really gel. For those not watching, this tune was recorded at Zac Brown’s recording studio in Nashville. Brown provides the flamenco-inspired guitar solo during the breakdown, and also backs up Grohl on vocals. The tune was one of my early favorites, and watching it be ‘birthed’ only added to the allure.
“Waiting for the Night” by Depeche Mode (from Violator, 1990)
It has been far too long since I last gave this album a proper listen. I’ve got the headphones on, so this tune is a real immersive experience, swirling around me with throat singers and whatnot. I love all the layers on this record.
“Da Journee” by Redman (from Dare Iz a Darkside, 1994)
This is more of a segue than anything else, though it’s long enough that my filter didn’t skip it.
“I’m Not in Love” by 10cc (from Guardians of the Galaxy: Awesome Mix Vol. 1, 2014)
Leave it to Marvel to make a handful of Yacht Rock standards “cool” with the kids. I take any issue with this, mind you. I’m just sayin’…
“Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)” by Eurythmics (from Like, Omigod! The ’80s Pop Culture Box (Totally) (disc 4), 2002)
Oh, that synth intro just kicks so many asses. The ’80s were rife with the like but this one stands head and shoulders above the rest.
What’s on your shuffle today?
