Friday Five : |ˈfrÄ«dÄ – fÄ«v| : On the sixth day of every week, I hit the shuffle button in iTunes and share the first five tracks and thought for each track. Sometimes there is a playlist involved, occasionally we’ll have a guest, but most of the time it’s just me. The rest is up to you, our friends and readers! Fire up the media player of your choice and share the first five random track of your shuffle in the comments.
The Five:
“Daydreaming” by Paramore (from Paramore, 2013)
This record should have been subtitled “how to successfully move on after half the band quits.” For those paying attention, it was already clear that Haley Williams was the band’s catalyst; the band’s 2013 self-titled release only cemented that assertion.
“The Devil” by Urban Dance Squad (from Mental Floss for the Globe, 1989)
There are excellent tracks on Mental Floss for the Globe that aren’t “Deeper Shade of Soul,” this is not one of them.
“Cowboy Boots” by Macklemore & Ryan Lewis (from The Heist, 2012)
There are excellent tracks on The Heist that aren’t “Same Love,” this is not one of them. It remains to be seen, but it’s possible that Macklemore & Ryan Lewis could be among the decade’s contingent of “one-hit wonders.” (Yes, I know that they had more than “one hit.”)
“It’s All Over Now, Baby Blue” by Bob Dylan (from The Essential Bob Dylan (disc 1), 2001)
For the amount of Dylan I have in my library (525 songs, 45 discs worth) he shuffles up very infrequently.
“Snowblind” by Black Sabbath (from We Sold Our Soul for Rock ‘n’ Roll, 1976)
Drugs are bad.
Is that too little to say about “Snowblind”? Vol. 4, the record this originally appeared on, is probably the height of Sabbath’s drug-fueled creativity. There are some truly excellent tunes on the record (“Snowblind” is absolutely one of them), but the inevitable long slide down from the heights is difficult to watch.
