Friday Five : |ˈfrÄ«dÄ – fÄ«v| : On the sixth day of every week, I hit the shuffle button in iTunes and share the first five tracks and thought for each track. Sometimes there is a playlist involved, occasionally we’ll have a guest, but most of the time it’s just me. The rest is up to you, our friends and readers! Fire up the media player of your choice and share the first five random track of your shuffle in the comments.
The Five:
“Papa Don’t Preach” by Madonna (from True Blue, 1986)
Okay, so here’s the deal: it’s Thursday night and I know that I have a hellacious Friday ahead of me, so here I am, iPhone in hand, ready to crank out a Friday Five. That means I’m shuffling from a smaller, albeit more familiar, deck. That said, on with the Five!
Oh, 1986, we were so innocent. Hell, Madonna only had to evoke some vague Christian imagery combined with some out-of-wedlock pregnancy to stir up controversy.
“She’s the Woman” by Van Halen (from Tokyo Dome in Concert, 2015)
I want to give this a fair shake.
I want to give this a fair shake.
I want to give this a fair shake.
“V.3005 (Beach Picnic version)” by Childish Gambino (from Kauai, 2014)
Hold up. Hip-hop in 2014 was 100% Gambino. This record is some crazy, next-level, existentialism. The version on Kauai is even more of a head-trip, because the Internet.
Hold up.
“(I Like) Funky Music” by Prince & The New Power Generation (from Newpower Soul, 1998)
I don’t dislike this song nearly as much as I used to, but it still ranks in the lower quarter of his cadre.
“Bury Our Friends” by Sleater-Kinney (from No Cities to Love, 2015)
I very much need to spend more time with this record. My initial reaction was all, “holy shit, this record is amazing!” Then I promptly forgot about it.
