Today’s stop in Bootleg City takes us back to the Budokan of November 1979, and some cleanly recorded (albeit not revelatory, or even in some cases particularly wonderful) performances by Marvin Gaye. This is a fairly consistently bootlegged set, which probably accounts for the flaky indexing (I’ve noticed that “Thank You Baby” is actually another version of “What’s Goin’ On,” and that’s only after listening to this disc for five minutes), but it’s an interesting glimpse of Gaye prior to his early ’80s renaissance and untimely death.

Next week’s artist will either be Hüsker Dü or Paul Westerberg; I haven’t decided yet. In the meantime:enjoy!
