As some longtime readers might already know (although this is highly doubtful), I have been the host of an Internet radio program titled, not so humbly, Radioshow With Dw. Dunphy. It has been running on the Penguin Internet Radio Station (also known as Asbury Music, at asburymusic.com). This station is the brainchild of music writer Gary Wien who wrote the Jersey-centric music books Beyond The Palace and Are You Listening? The Top 100 Albums of 2001-2010 by New Jersey Artists, one of which is Popdose’s very own Ken Shane.
Wien’s goal was to devise an Internet music station more in keeping with the original idea of rock radio than with a Spotify playlist, where music fans curate and present new and different stuff to eager listeners, rather than those listeners making their own playlists to the detriment of experiencing something new. It is his hobby and his passion but also very much an experiment-in-progress.
Wien contacted me in 2008 and asked if I would contribute a one-hour bi-weekly show to the line-up, and I leaped at the chance. For me the best radio was the type that, while still grounded in the rock format, was not afraid of throwing in something completely unexpected, far out of the format, and maybe would expose the susceptible to something they never would have heard before. I don’t pretend to be a Vin Scelsa, and my voice is as far from a Scott Muni as one could ever get (clean livin’ has some disadvantages, I guess) but the goal is to give you something you didn’t know you wanted to hear until you heard it. Expect the deepest cut we can find. Don’t wait for “Sweet Child O’Mine” or “Stairway To Heaven” because you won’t get them.
However, if this sounds like a fun idea to you, pop on by. Just click the graphic above and choose the audio player that works best with your system. We look forward to hearing what you think.
Radioshow With Dw Dunphy airs Wednesday nights at 8:00 p.m. EST, rebroadcasts on Saturday morning at 9:00 a.m. EST and Saturday night at 9:00 p.m.
