Picked up from J at Thinking About:

Of all the bands and artists in your collection, of which one do you own the most albums?

Oh God. Well, according to Winamp, it’s Dan Bern, but I’m positive that’s due to bad tagging Á¢€” Bern hasn’t released 40 albums. From there, in descending order: Chicago, McCartney, Billy Joel, Springsteen, Elton, Van Morrison, Taj Mahal, The Rolling Stones, Squeeze, John Hiatt, and James Taylor.

What was the last song you listened to?

Bill Frisell’s “Yuba City.”

What are your favorite instruments?

Harmonica and trumpet.

Who’s your favorite local artist/band?

I’m not aware of any, unless Boston counts as “local,” and since Boston is two hours away, I’ve decided it doesn’t count.

What was the last show you attended?

Oof. Hmm. Probably a Fred Wilhelm show, or maybe the Second Chair All-Stars in Nashville a few years ago.

What was the greatest show you’ve ever been to?

This is terribly unhip, but it might actually be Harry Connick, Jr. Á¢€” my high school girlfriend dragged me to a show in ’92 or ’93, and he did a big band NOLA-style rave-up. Ain’t nothing like the real thing, but growing up in the Bay Area, that was as close as I was ever going to get. Also, you can’t really beat 15 minutes of inserting “without your drawers on” into every other line of “You Are My Sunshine.” Other memorable shows: Bruce Hornsby in ’99 and ’00, Randy Newman in ’00, Def Leppard in ’88, BNL in ’98, Great Big Sea and Guster in ’01, the Mavericks in ’98, Hall & Oates in ’91, Tom Petty in ’95.

What’s the worst band you’ve ever seen in concert?

Jackyl and Damn Yankees, February 1992.

What band do you love musically but hate the members of?

I can’t think of any.

What is the most musically involved you have ever been?

From ’92-’01, I thought I was a recording artist. (No, seriously.)

What show are you looking forward to?

The long-rumored Jefitopalooza.

What is your favorite band shirt?

I used to have a “Bruce Willis 1987 World Tour” shirt, with all four tourdates listed on the back.

What musician would you like to hang out with for a day?

They’re never as much fun to hang out with as you think.

What musician would you like to be in love with you for a day?

Dude, my wife is reading this. Ixnay on the ove-lay.

What was your last musical “phase” before you wised up?

None of them have ever really ended. Nobody doesn’t suck all the time.

Sabbath or solo Ozzy?

I don’t care.

What was the greatest decade for music?

I think the popular answer to this is always “the one before the last one.”

What is your favorite movie soundtrack?

Huh. I’m generally partial to horrible ’80s soundtracks, but for some good Sunday-morning music, the 2 Days in the Valley soundtrack is hard to beat.

Who is your favorite artist who is much better live than on a recording?

Any artist worth his salt is better live.

Do you have a hidden desire to be a popular musician?

No, and really, I’ve never met anyone who seemed to want to be a popular musician Á¢€” just a lot of people who wanted to be able to make a living doing it.

Have you ever used drugs to enhance the music experience?

Nope.
