Short Term 12 is an indie film that’s been generating buzz all year long, thanks in large part to the performance of Brie Larson. The actress, who appeared on Showtime’s United States of Tara and such films as Scott Pilgrim vs. the World and 21 Jump Street, takes command in the leading role of Grace, a twenty-something supervisor at a facility for at-risk teenagers.
Written and directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, Short Term 12 is told through Grace’s eyes. Passionate and tough, she juggles caretaking the kids in her charge and the love she has for her boyfriend and co-worker, Mason (John Gallagher Jr., The Newsroom). But Grace’s own difficult past — and the surprising future that suddenly presents itself — throw her into unforeseen confusion, made all the sharper with the arrival of a new intake at the facility: a gifted but troubled teenage girl with whom Grace has a charged connection.
The subject matter of this film is complex and reviews have been glowing for Larson and this movie. Short Term 12 is Cretton’s second feature and it also stars Kaitlyn Dever (Bad Teacher), Rami Malek (The Master), and Keith Stanfield.
