The Friday Mixtape: 7/10/09

David Medsker July 10, 2009 13

Paying tribute to some songs that have had trouble making it across the pond. Not all of them, but too many of them, if you ask me.

Shed Seven – Speak Easy from Change Giver (1994)
Delays – Valentine from You See Colours (2006)
Attic Lights – Bring You Down from Friday Night Lights (2008)
The Bluebells – Cath from Sisters (1984)
The Divine Comedy – Arthur C. Clarke’s Mysterious World from Victory for the Comic Muse (2006)
Cast – Magic Hour from Magic Hour (1999)
The Feeling – Sewn from Twelve Stops and Home (2007)
The Lightning Seeds – Like You Do from Dizzy Heights (1997)
Nik Kershaw – Radio Musicola (Extended Version) from Radio Musicola (1986)
Tenpole Tudor – Swords of a Thousand Men from Eddie, Old Bob, Dick & Gary (1981)
Julian Cope – Planet Ride from Saint Julian (1987)
The Wonder Stuff – Full of Life (Happy Now) from Construction for the Modern Idiot (1993)
Boomtown Rats – Another Sad Story from In the Long Grass (1985)
China Crisis – Blue Sea from Flaunt the Imperfection (1985)
Rialto – London Crawling from Night on Earth (2001)
The Hours – See the Light from See the Light (2009)

My favorite Rialto song is “Untouchable” from their first album. This mixtape is the shit though!

The Divine Comedy and The Lightning Seeds on the same post. Awesome!

I can't believe that album by The Feeling came and went in America. To me, that album had some of the great pop songs of this decade. Their latest release didn't measure up, but that first CD should be considered a classic.

Easily one of my favorite albums of the decade. Agreed on the second album, though I loved the title track.

“Sewn.” The best song McCartney should've written.

  • Eric S.

There are so many great pop influences on that album it's scary. You've got McCartney, Queen, ELO, 10cc, Jellyfish just to name a few.

Guys, please check out the Attic Lights track. The record even stiffed in the UK, which is insane, because it's AWESOME.

  • The Man I Used To Be

“Fill My Little World Up”, I dare say, is the best Power Pop song of the 00s.

You commented on a Mix Six that Madness was “Too British” for the United States (I'm paraphrasing here). And while I really love Tenpole Tudor, I think the “Too British” label applies — which could be why they had trouble making it across the pond.

I'm loving it. I also really like the Hours song. That's 2 in one week. I may have to get the album now. :)
