Birmingham, Alabama’s Dead Fingers return with their sophomoric effort, Big Black Dog. The husband and wife duo of Kate and Taylor Hollingsworth are back after two years since their debut and the birth of their baby. Eleven slightly skewed songs that have quirky rhythms, lyrical twists and wonderful harmonic interplay in the vocals. From the opening title track to “Free Tonight”, you know this isn’t quite your standard collection of pop. There’s a country-esque twang in the voices with upbeat melodies that belie some of less-than-joyful lyrics. “Twisted” is just that – an offbeat hoedown; “Holy Water” is a country-fried runaway train that swerves and moves with some great guitar licks at the beginning. “Feet Back On The Ground” is very poppy and is easily my favorite – has all the elements of something you could enjoy hearing on the radio – sweet vocal, melody, intricacies and embellishments (like the toy-piano sounds). All in all, a very satisfying collection.
This is only second album from Dead Fingers – and they’re now hitting stride. Big Black Dog doesn’t bite but it’s a welcome companion on your iPod.
