From their first appearance in 2010’s Despicable Me, the little banana-colored henchmen known as the Minions have instantly become favorites – of children and adults alike (present company included).  Their presence in the two movies (including the 2013 sequel) made the movie even funnier and added a certain innocence and sweetness.  These are simply entertaining and lovable characters.

This past summer, the Minions’ story was told from the beginning in the box-office runaway smash hit, Minions.  As the synopsis tells you:  “evolving from single-celled yellow organisms at the dawn of time, Minions live to serve, but find themselves working for a continual series of unsuccessful masters, from T. Rex to Napoleon. Without a master to grovel for, the Minions fall into a deep depression. But one minion, Kevin, has a plan; accompanied by his pals Stuart and Bob, Kevin sets forth to find a new evil boss for his brethren to follow. Their search leads them to Scarlet Overkill, the world’s first-ever super-villainess.” (played hilariously by the always-delightful Sandra Bullock).  Amongst the voice talents that add to the charm and comedic brilliance of this movie are Jennifer Saunders, Geoffrey Rush, Michael Keaton, Allison Janney and Jon Hamm, who is brilliant as the husband, Herb, to Scarlet Overkill.

This movie is full of good humor, some cleverly covert risque humor, bizarre and twisted humor and an amazing soundtrack – a proverbial “greatest hits of the 1960’s” (a masterstroke, really).  But the most important thing is the genuine sweetness exuded by the Minions – especially little Bob.  There’s a very strong underlying theme of friendship, loyalty, trust and determination in this story.  It easily crosses generational lines and it’s a movie for EVERYONE, which instantly makes it a winner.

Minions is a movie you can enjoy with your kids or on your own.  Either way, you’ll laugh and be charmed.  The DVD/Blu-ray combo package comes with many bonuses; most importantly, three new Minions short films, which are equally fun/funny plus a deleted scene and “behind the scenes” extras.  Perfect as a gift or just for your own family’s pleasure.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
