Everyone thought it was crazy for the drummer of Nirvana to go solo as an axe-wielding frontman and look how that turned out for him. Now that Foo Fighters are a global multi-platform mega media corporation, the senior partners are surprisingly as busy with start-ups and one-offs as they are the day job that takes them to stadiums throughout 2015.
In March, steadfast bassist Nate Mendel adds another band to his portfolio to keep up with Dave Grohl (Them Crooked Vultures, QOTSA, Teenage Time Killers, Probot), Taylor Hawkins (Chevy Metal, The Coattail Riders, The Birds of Satan) and Chris Shiflett (Me First and the Gimme Gimmes, Jackson United, The Dead Peasants).
Lieutenant (not to be confused with New Order side-project, Bad Lieutenant) marks Mendel’s first turn as a singer, songwriter and frontman. He tracked the album at Foo Fighters’ Studio 606 on the infamous Sound City Neve console with producer/engineer Toshi Kasai (Melvins, Helmet). Guests include Page Hamilton (Helmet) and Josiah Johnson (Head and the Heart) on ”Believe The Squalor” and vocalist Jeremy Enigk (Sunny Day Real Estate) and Shiflett on ”The Place You Wanna Go.” No Grohl cameo? What, Nate worry? Of course not.
