Meiko hails from the City of Angels, and like many of my favorite artists, she made a name for herself on the tiny stage at Hollywood’s thriving singer/songwriter mecca, Hotel CafÁ©. While she has yet to ascend to global super stardom like alumni Katy Perry and Sara Bareilles, she has certainly developed a feverish fanbase at home and abroad (especially in Japan where her single ‘Stuck on You’ was a #1 radio hit). If you’re a fan of Katy, Sara or their fellow CafÁ© angels who we adore here at POPDOSE: Sara Melson, amilia k. spicer, Kat Parsons, Kate Voegele, Brooke White and Eric Hutchinson, prepare to swoon big time.

Just in time for Valentine’s Day, Meiko follows up on her 2014 album, Dear You, with the Lovers & Fighters EP (out 2/10/15). Lovers is a whimsical umbrella dance through the puddles of love, lust, harmony and heartache. Rain emerges as a theme in the lovely opening track, ‘Raincoat Song’, and returns in our premiere today. For most of the world, rain is part of everyday life, in LA, it is a major event.

Lead single, (Change the) ‘Weather for the Better’ marries a Violent Femmes drumline and retro Pipettes keyboards to usher Meiko’s meet cute story down the aisle.

Hmmm, perhaps I’ll share this track to my wife, Maura, as part of a Valentine’s Day playlist. Why, you ask? In her book, Unbreakable Woman, she introduces “Change The Weather” as a technique you can use to instantly diffuse a potentially dangerous situation. What could be more dangerous than falling in love? Well, besides going to the ATM at 3:00 AM or having a creepy stranger get onto your elevator…

In Meiko’s world there is no danger with this handsome stranger — or is there? For a brief moment, cloudy skies clear when she meets her true love. Sadly, not every romance gets a happy ending. Our heroine needs to change the weather one more time before the credits roll as the EP’s weepy closer, ‘Sweeter’, ends the affair on a lovelorn note.
