The story so far: Brian and Kate had a huge fight at Eric’s house. Kate stormed out and drove home alone. After a talk with Eric, Brian drove to Kate’s house and tried to get into her room by climbing a nearby tree and on to the roof. Unfortunately, he lost his footing and fell to the ground. Despite her anger, Kate still went outside to see is he was hurt. The year is 1987.
KATE / BRIAN
”Are you hurt?”
”Just my pride.”
”What were you thinking?”
”I’ve done that maneuver a dozen times. My foot slipped is all.”
”You have a leaf in your hair. Here, let me.”
”Thanks.”
”Why are you here? Shouldn’t you be at the party?”
”Come on, Kate. Of course I’m going to come after you.”
”Well, what do you want?”
”What do you think? We have to talk.”
”Maybe we should wait.”
”Wait for what?”
”Until we’re calmer, I guess. I don’t want to slap you again.”
”I deserved that. I was out of line, Kate. I’m sorry. You’re not a bitch. You’re fine. You’re perfect.”
”No, I’m not. I know that!”
”Please, Kate, just sit for a minute.”
”Fine.”
”So many stars tonight.”
”My brother would love it.”
”Where is he, anyway?”
”Out with a friend. I forbade him to go to Eric’s party.”
”Probably a good idea. Is that Sagittarius?”
”Yeah.”
”You pointed it out to me that night, at the drive-in. We went for a walk. We sat on the carousel.”
”You remember that?”
”Of course I do.”
”I… No. No, we can’t do this, Brian.”
”Do what?”
”Reminisce about the good times when we’re breaking up. Isn’t that why you’re here?”
”I… I came over to make sure you’re okay.”
”That’s the only reason? Because if it is, I’m fine and you can go back to Eric’s.”
”I… I…”
”Come on, Brian, don’t make me be the one to say it.”
”I think we should break up, Kate.”
”Look at that, you made a decision.”
”I didn’t think it would hurt this much.”
”Isn’t it better this way than to wind up resenting each other?”
”I’m not sure that’s possible, Brian.”
”Kate, you’re crying. Here–“
”Get your hand away from me!”
”I was only trying to wipe your tears.”
”These tears are mine. They’re not your tears anymore. Go claim Allison’s tears.”
”She has nothing to do with this.”
”She has everything to do with this! You kissed her, Brian!”
”How many times do I have to apologize?”
”I don’t want your damn apology.”
”Fine.”
”But I want you to admit it.”
”Admit what, Kate?”
”Admit that you’re in love with her.”
”Kate, don’t.”
”Admit it!”
”Kate…”
”Brian!”
”Yes! I love her! There, are you happy?”
”No, I’m not happy! My heart is broken into a hundred pieces.”
”I’m sorry. I can’t control how I feel.”
”I get that. But it doesn’t make this any better.”
”What can I do?”
”Leave. Don’t call me.”
”That’s it? We’re not even going to be friends?”
”I don’t know. Goodbye.”
”Goodbye, Kate.”
